My Dad - THE FIGHTER - Mike O'Malley

As most of you know, things have been a little crazy in the O'Malley family lately. On Sunday, December 11th Dad was rushed by ambulance to the Emergency Room after having a seizure. He spent 2 days in the Neuro ICU at UW Hospital and then 2 additional days in a general care hospital room. He was treated for ensephilitis which was the cause for the seizure. This is a disease caused by herpes that sits dormant in your cheek (everyone has it). 1 in 100,000 people have a flare up (could be caused by stress) and the cold sore moves forward to your mouth. In my Dad's case the herpes moved up the nerve to his brain causing terrible headaches and ultimately causing the seizure. 95% of cases result in death or coma. He was incredibly lucky. During his hospital stay he had many CT scans of the brain and a full body MRI and unfortunately they also found numerous blood clots in his lungs. He was released from the hospital on Thursday, December 15th and would learn with a Home Health Care team to administer 3 doses of anitbiotics through a Pic line in his arm along with 2 shots of Coumodin, a blood thinner. He was released for 24 hours when a terrible headache came back. He complained that this headache was worse than anything he had experienced before. We gave him his pain killers and nothing was working. At 9:00 pm on Friday, December 16th Mom took him back to the Emergency Room at UW Hospital. They immediately took him back for another CT scan of his brain when they instantly found bleeding in his brain. This bleeding was unfortunately caused by the blood thinners. The disease that caused the seizure weakened the tissue in his brain and the blood thinners were able to impact his brain and eventually cause the bleeding. They tried to reverse the bleeding with plasma, this would be a 24 hour process because the blood thinners were not leaving his system. Saturday, December 17th was the longest day in all of our lives. Dad became weaker and his responses were slower and minimal. We watched the clock closely waiting for 24 hours to pass. At that time they would attempt to insert a ventricular drain in his brain to relieve the pressure and start removing the blood. The procedure didn't produce the immediate results that they were hoping for and within an hour the surgeon was sitting our family down to tell us they'd be performing emergency brain surgery at 9:00 pm Saturday night. Surgery lasted between 2-3 hours and we were happy to hear that he made it out of surgery. It is now 10 days post surgery and things are slowly progressing. His breathing tube was removed on Thursday, December 22nd. At that time he was taken off the profopol which is also called the "milk of amnesia" the same drug Michael Jackson was on. It took some time for the drug to get out of his system. On Saturday, December 24th we were so incredibly happy to hear him say MERRY CHRISTMAS to us. We spent the Christmas Holiday in the ICU at UW Hospital but that's ok, we would do anything to spend the holidays with him.

Everyday is a struggle and we have a long road ahead of us. He is the strongest man I know and his strength shines through everyday. I am so proud of him. We continue to pray for positive results each day. He will still be in the ICU for awhile...more updates to come as he progresses...

Thanks to everyone for all your positive support and prayers. It's incredible to see the love for my Dad. He's incredible...and we tell him everyday!

Baby Bump Updates...

Things are progressing in my belly. I'm getting bigger and it's becoming more difficult to do simple tasks. We still have 10 weeks left but getting my shoes on and off is starting to get tricky. I'm sure many more things will become difficult as I continue to get bigger.

Our baby bedding arrived this week so the nursery is slowly coming together. We also purchased a baby doll to help train Kirby. It has been interesting to see how excited she gets about the baby. She runs upstairs and sits outside the baby room looking for the baby. We can't wait to bring home the real baby in 10 short weeks...

Baby O'Hinrichs Shower...

On Sunday, November 27th Bridget & Amy hosted a Baby Shower for me. It was held at The Roost - Hawks Landing Golf Club. There were so many people that attended. We are so incredibly blessed to have all of you in our lives. Everyone was so generous, we couldn't be more thankful for all of you. Thanks to everyone once again...

Thanksgiving...

This year we have so much to be thankful for. First we were so incredibly spoiled by spending the Thanksgiving Holiday with both sides of our family. The entire Hinrichs family came to Madison to stay with us. We spent Thanksgiving at my parents house with all the O'Malley's and Hinrichs'. It was so special to have everyone together. This Thanksgiving we can be thankful for the biggest gift of all - the gift of life. Only 10 more weeks until we welcome our little one into the world.

Friday the ladies of the family got up and went shopping for Black Friday. We didn't start until 8 am, so we weren't the crazy people out at midnight. We shopped until around 2 pm and had a break for lunch with everyone. Friday night we went to the Badger Hockey game with Dave and Keri. Saturday we went to the Badger Football game with Amy, Linda, and Jim. Sunday was the Baby O'Hinrichs baby shower. The extended weekend was filled with lots of fun...

Refinishing Project...

Scott was given a really nice wood dresser from a friend when he lived in the Fraternity. We've been using it for additional storage for the past few years. It was in the baby room and I figured why buy a new dresser if we can just paint an existing one. I spent a day in the garage refinishing the dresser and I'm very happy with the results. If I'm lucky I will start to refinish my parents old rocking chair...

Baby Bump Updates...

I know I'm getting bigger everyday but it's crazy to look back on the pictures from ONE week ago. I'm officially in the 3rd trimester now, and I couldn't be more excited. Only 12 weeks to go! The nursery won't be updated until after Thanksgiving. We have our first baby class this weekend. It's all becoming much more real these days. On that note...we better start picking some names for our little one...

28 weeks

27 weeks - the first day of the last trimester!

Our glucose test results came back perfectly normal. However, my iron was very low. I wasn't surprised as I've always had low iron. It does help explain why I've been so tired. Hopefully the iron supplements will help to supply me and the baby with more energy. Other than that, everything is measuring just fine. My next appointment is the first week of December. I can't wait to hear the heartbeat again!

Minnesota Football & Mounds View Boys

This past weekend we traveled to Minnesota for the weekend. The Badgers played Minnesota in the annual "border battle" for the Axe. Scott went up on Thursday to spend some time with Jim and Linda. Unfortunately Jim had to leave for a conference in Florida on Friday morning so I wasn't able to see him while we were there. I drove up with Monica and Kaleb on Friday after work. Saturday was spent tailgating, going to the game, and time with friends and family. We went over to Trent and Jacqui's house in Coon Rapids on Saturday night. It was fun for Scott to see all of his High School buddies. Here are some pictures...
